Background of the Study
Adolescence is a critical period of growth and development, requiring adequate nutrition to support physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. However, in many parts of Nigeria, including Gombe State, adolescents often exhibit poor dietary habits, characterized by inadequate consumption of fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich foods, alongside an increased intake of processed foods high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats (WHO, 2024). These unhealthy eating patterns contribute to various health risks, including obesity, stunted growth, and micronutrient deficiencies.
Balanced diets play a crucial role in maintaining health by ensuring that individuals receive essential nutrients in appropriate proportions. A well-balanced diet includes carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals, all of which contribute to overall well-being and disease prevention (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023). However, limited nutrition knowledge among adolescents, coupled with socio-economic constraints, peer influence, and cultural food preferences, often leads to unhealthy eating behaviors.
Governmental and non-governmental organizations have introduced school-based nutrition education programs aimed at increasing awareness of healthy eating among adolescents. However, the effectiveness of these programs in improving dietary habits in Gombe State has not been adequately assessed. Understanding the level of adolescent awareness regarding balanced diets and healthy eating habits is crucial for developing targeted interventions that promote better nutrition and long-term health.
Statement of the Problem
The prevalence of poor dietary habits among adolescents in Gombe State is increasing, raising concerns about their long-term health outcomes. Many adolescents lack adequate knowledge about the importance of a balanced diet and often consume energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods. This can lead to malnutrition, obesity, and increased susceptibility to non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension later in life.
Despite existing school nutrition education programs, many adolescents still exhibit poor dietary behaviors, indicating a potential gap in nutrition awareness efforts. Factors such as food availability, parental influence, and peer pressure further complicate efforts to promote healthy eating. Without a clear understanding of adolescents’ awareness of balanced diets and their perceptions of healthy eating, it is difficult to design effective interventions.
This study seeks to investigate the level of awareness of balanced diets and healthy eating habits among adolescents in Gombe State. The findings will provide insights into existing gaps in nutrition education and inform strategies to improve dietary behaviors among young people.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of awareness of balanced diets among adolescents in Gombe State.
To evaluate factors influencing adolescents’ dietary choices and eating habits.
To determine the effectiveness of school-based nutrition education programs in promoting healthy eating behaviors.
Research Questions
What is the level of awareness of balanced diets among adolescents in Gombe State?
What factors influence dietary choices and eating habits among adolescents?
How effective are school-based nutrition education programs in improving healthy eating habits?
Research Hypotheses
Adolescents with higher awareness of balanced diets are more likely to practice healthy eating habits.
Socio-economic and cultural factors significantly influence adolescents’ dietary choices.
School-based nutrition education programs positively impact adolescents’ eating behaviors.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on adolescents in secondary schools in Gombe State, assessing their knowledge of balanced diets and dietary practices. The study may be limited by self-reported dietary behaviors, which may not always accurately reflect actual eating habits. Additionally, variations in access to healthy food options across different socio-economic groups may impact the findings.
